Abiy Ahmed Secures Another Five-Year Term as Ethiopia’s Prime Minister

(MENAFN) Ethiopia’s parliament on Monday renewed Abiy Ahmed’s mandate as prime minister for another five-year term following the country’s general election in June.

Abiy secured another term after his ruling Prosperity Party won 438 of the parliament’s 547 seats. He formally began his new mandate after taking the constitutional oath of office.

The swearing-in ceremony was attended by President Taye Atske-Selassie and senior government officials.

Abiy’s reelection comes as Ethiopia faces renewed fighting between government forces and the newly established Ethiopian Peoples’ Forces Alliance for Survival, which is seeking to remove his government from power.

Ethiopian authorities have accused several regional countries, including neighboring Eritrea, of supporting armed groups involved in the conflict.

Amid escalating tensions with Eritrea, Ethiopia announced Thursday that it was closing its embassy in the neighboring country and had declared 10 Eritrean diplomats in Addis Ababa persona non grata.
